Kempf Law Home

Welcome to my website. It provides both background information and an update on my recent activities. In short, as you'll see, I'm busy and having fun - pursuing a diversified portfolio of exciting activities and interests.

Antitrust Modernization Commission. In May, 2007, I concluded a three-year stint as one of the twelve Commissioners. (Our 449-page report and recommendations to the President and Congress is at www.amc.gov, including my 14-page separate statement beginning at page 428.)

New affiliations. I am now a Senior Advisor at both Gleacher Partners and Blaqwell Inc.

Gleacher Partners (www.gleacher.com) - or just click on Gleacher Partners above - is a leading independent investment bank, specializing in providing strategic advisory services. My primary focus will be on M&A, fairness opinions (particularly in light of new FINRA Rule 2290), corporate governance and the like.

Blaqwell Inc. (www.blaqwell.com) - or just click on Blaqwell above - is an independent consultant for the legal industry. I'll be working mainly with corporate law departments - though some with law firms as well - on matters such as issues faced by new general counsel, the quality and cost of legal services (and how to improve on both fronts), etc.

I am excited about these affiliations and the opportunity they afford me to provide "value added" service to clients. Please consider me if an appropriate situation presents itself.

Arbitration and mediation. I've been certified as a neutral by both AAA (www.adr.org) and CPR (www.cpradr.org). I'm available to do both arbitration and mediation. You can learn more about this by clicking on ADR above. Again, I hope you will call on me to provide such services when appropriate.

Teaching. This spring marked my third year of teaching at the University of Colorado Law School in Boulder. My course, "Government Regulation of Business," examines contemporary regulatory issues within a law, economics and policy framework. It's a lot of fun. You can see my ·speaking· syllabus by clicking on Teaching above.

Writing and speaking. My new writings range from an op/ed in The Wall Street Journal to articles for legal publications to a chapter in the new book Your Witness: Lessons on Cross-examination and Life from Great Chicago Trial Lawyers. (For a complete list of my published writings, click on Publications above.) I've been speaking too - doing my Academy Awards of the Courtroom presentation and participating as a speaker or panelist at various conferences.

Law practice. While - at least for the time being - I've chosen not to affiliate with a law firm, I've taken on a number of legal representations. They've varied from the appeal of a college disciplinary ruling to the $3 billion settlement of a class-action securities case. I've concluded that presenting cases and cross-examining are sort of like swimming and riding a bike, in that the ability to do them, once learned, sticks with you. Life in general. Nancy and I divide our time among Chicago, Aspen and Florida. (It's tough duty, but, hey, someone has to do it.) We see a lot of our three sons and five grandchildren. And, believe it or not, I've even taken up golf! Life, as they say, is good.
